University of Bristol CETSEI Department of Earth Sciences

Computing Resources

The Deep Earth Research group has access to a range of computing resources, from desktops and workstations to dedicated and general access many-node high performance computing facilities.

Desktops and workstations

CETSEI almost exclusively uses Apple machines to provide personal computing, including a variety of iMacs, MacPros and laptops. For more information on using Macs in the geosciences, see Mac Eye for the Geophysics Guy. We also have access to a number of Windows machines for specific applications.

HPC facilities

The availability of vast amounts of affordable computing power is driving a revolution in many fields of Science, including the Geosciences. The group has access to a range of such resources. We have a dedicated Mac Xserve cluster (24 3GHz Intel CPUs, 48GB RAM, 2TB Disk) for development and smaller tasks; and access to the University HPC provision. This will include the new machine BlueCrystal (4000+ CPUs, 4TB RAM, 20Gb/s connectivity, multi-petabyte storage).

Software

We have access to general scientific languages such as MATLAB, and a range of free and commercial compilers. Various graphics and mathematics packages are used regularly.
